new orleans photography classes

2 HOUR PRIVATE PHOTOGRAPHY CLASSES

Each lesson is conducted in 2 hour blocks and can be tailored to your needs.

INVESTMENT
$250 per class or purchase all 5 classes for $1000

CLASS 1: CAMERA BASICS
Introduction to camera settings: ISO, aperture, shutter, autofocus, file settings, etc.

CLASS 2: AVAILABLE LIGHTING & FLASH
This class aims to combine what we learned in class 1 to real world lighting situations. How the exposure triangle (f-stop, ISO, and shutter) affects the way you and your camera read light. We will spend some time looking at sample images to examine different lighting scenarios, go over real world applications and (depending on your skill level) study off camera flash.

CLASS 3: EDITING
One of the MOST important aspects of being a good photographer is being a good editor. That encompasses two parts: editing for selection and editing or “processing” images for color, exposure, retouching, etc. In this class, we will edit a recent shoot you did and optimize your images as if you were delivering them to a client.

CLASS 4: WORKFLOW
A continuation of the editing class- we will cover software practices for optimal workflow. Recommended software: Lightroom or Capture One & Photoshop.

CLASS 5: BUSINESS BASICS
So you want to be a photographer? Did you know at least 60% of your time will be spent behind the scenes marketing, answering emails, developing workflows, editing, doing taxes, etc.? This class will touch on what it takes to run a successful photography business, how to get clients, and build a working portfolio.

CONTINUING EDUCATION

Because your photography learning journey never ends, I offer to expand on any of the above topics or you may add the following lessons to broaden your creative mind and really dig into the art of photography.

STUDYING THE MASTERS $250
One of my favorite lessons in art school was studying the masters of photography and diving in to the history and creation of this amazing medium. In this class, we will tour the work of some of my favorite photographers as well as yours! We will diagnose different approaches and ways you can be inspired by them in your own work. Don’t overlook this class as it is one of the best ways to evolve your work and open your creative mind.

PREPARING A CREATIVE SHOOT $250 (ADDITIONAL MODEL FEE $100)*
Do you have a creative shoot in mind that you’ve been yearning to do but are having trouble executing? This class is for you. I will help you create a vision board, source props and styling elements, and consider all the minor details that present themselves in these type of shoots. The more prepared you are, the more successful your shoot will go. Ultimately, these shots will become the most important pieces in your portfolio because they represent you as an artist.

INTRO TO FILM PHOTOGRAPHY $275 (1 ROLL OF FILM INCLUDED)
One of the best building blocks to learning photography is learning through analog methods. In this class, I teach 35mm and medium format film basics- different camera types, film stocks, how to load film, meter/rating, and best ways to process.

ADVANCED FILM PHOTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES $275 (1 ROLL OF FILM INCLUDED)*
This class goes beyond the basics. How to pair strobes with film, metering for flash, light ratios, processing black and white film at home, scanning and editing negatives. For portrait photographers, a model may be provided for an additional $100.

ASSIGNMENT $350*
Over the course of my career, I have found the most innovation in my work when given a prompt or assignment. I have created some of my favorite portfolio images that changed the direction of my photography and truly changed my vision as an artist. This is a two part lesson where I give you a prompt to execute a small series of images. The first hour will be spent discussing the vision and how you will interpret the assignment. We will meet a week later to view and critique your work and discuss how you did or could’ve done better.

STUDIO PORTRAIT LIGHTING $550* (3 HR CLASS)
In classical portraiture there are several things you need to control and think about to make a flattering portrait of your subjects. In this class, we will cover 3 of my favorite lighting techniques: Rembrandt, Split, and Butterfly and apply them to a real life portrait shoot. A model will be provided for hands-on experience.

POSING YOUR SUBJECT $550*

Have you mastered the technical aspects of photography but are failing to make meaningful connections with your subject? Posing is one of the hardest things to master and often times is overlooked. In order to succeed in this area, you need to build confidence and feel comfortable as a director. Though this takes years of practice, I impart some things I’ve learned along the way that you can build upon. A model will be provided for hands-on coaching.
